Lookie what I caught my Bryophyllum tubiflorum doing :D He's trying to root into midair! xD I wonder if I should put another pot next to him, for those little roots to get some nutrients...that would get hard to move around though...

More bad news! :( Some of my Senecio howorthii seems rather flaccid... I think it's rotting... Its two main shoots seem ok for now...

In other news, my Echeveria melaco's flowers are finally fading...I'll probably trim the stalk once they're completely dry.

The rest of the Peperomia gravolens is looking good (for now. fingers are crossed!)

With all this rot popping up so suddenly, I've been keeping all the succulents away from water. I don't think they've been watered for two weeks now... maybe next week they'll get a drink...

It seems my Peperomia graveolens has rotted. Only one of its shoots, thankfully. :( I'm going to try to salvage it though, since I spotted it before the entire shoot was destroyed. I cut off the top with a sharp knife, and it is now drying. I think the consensus on the internet is to let it dry for a week before replanting it... we'll see how it does...

see where the stem near the root has gotten squishy?
Luckily, the majority of the plant is still ok...

My Peperomia gravolens has some new baby leaflets! They're sprouting from where some of the larger leaves fell off at Home Depot. :)

Nothing much to update really... just posting a picture of the full happy succulent garden. :)

The Bryophyllum tubiflorum (?) is still sideways, but reaching upwards... so I guess he's ok...

New!

Went to Lowes today and picked up another succulent! It's some sort of lithops. I was impressed with selection of succulents and cacti Lowes carried, but not with their care. There were many that had withered...but not my lithops! :D Here he is, in all his stone-like glory.

Also, my Bryophyllum tubiflorum (?) is wilting! Does anyone know what might have caused this? D: Too much water? Not enough light? Too cold when I bring it inside? :(

He doesn't seem to be rotting, though I suppose any rot could be below the surface...

More plants~

Ok, so these were actually some of my first succulents. I just haven't gotten pictures of them up yet. So here they are :D

Senecio howorthii -I am rather fond of this one, and keep a special eye on it, because one of its shoots rotted soon after I got it home... :( -

Portulacaria afra -I accidently knock its leaves off sometimes...are they still called leaves on a succulent?-

Sedum pachyphyllum -see the fused 'leaves'? on the right? :D-

Jovibarba heuffelii -with two 'chicks'! I will take no credit for nurturing these though :) they were there when I bought this one-

The things I do for these plants...

So there I was, sleeping peaceably, listening to the hum of my room fan. I then noticed something beyond the usual hum, and - being groggy from just waking up - it took me several minutes to identify then unknown sound. Then I realized it was raining. My first thought was, 'Oh, that sounds nice...', then I flipped out of bed, heart pounding, because my beleaguered brain had just realized that my succulents were outside...in the pouring rain. Needless to say, several minutes later they were all safely inside, and I was soaked. Being that it was 2am, I just went back to bed, but spent another uncomfortable hour wet and cold, trying to get back to sleep. :P Hopefully I rescued everyone before they got too much rain...I'll keep an eye out for rot, to be on the safe side.

Another unidentified succulent now has a possible identity!

I think this is a Kalanchoe humilis? If anyone thinks I've mis-identified it, please let me know!

I think I've identified one of my older succulents...

I think it's a Bryophyllum tubiflorum? If anyone thinks I've mis-identified it, please let me know! I'll try to get a better picture up too...this one seems a bit dark...and it has some itty-bitty babies at its base! :D

We've been getting a bunch of rain recently where I live, so I've been hauling the succulents inside whenever it gets overcast. I don't want them to drown! (or rot, as it were...) I'll need to rig up some sort of greenhouse covering for them...

gratuitous succulent picture~

All of my new succulents are settled cozily in their new dip tray :) Also picked up another unknown succulent from pikes today, so I'll try to get a picture up tomorrow.

The First Entry

Recently, I was wandering around Walmart (looking for something, surely, but I can't remember what now...) and stumbled upon a display of succulents. Immediately taken with the darling plants, I took home six and planted them in pots with little decorative glass pebbles on top. They've been growing nicely, and on a recent trip to Home Depot, I spotted another display. Of course, I couldn't resist taking home another five of them. I've quite the porch garden going on now! :D Anyways, on the ride home with my five new succulents, I started reading the labels (I wasn't driving! xD ) and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had come from such diverse locations as South Africa, Italy/France, and Peru. Right here to Georgia! Needless to say, a couple of long hours were spent on Google admiring various varieties of succulents. I then examined my first six succulents, trying to identify them. Luckily, I'd save the pots four of them had come in, so I still had the scientific names to look up, but two are still nameless. Then I started putting together a document identifying all of my current succulents, and finally I decided to put this compendium in blog form, to share with the rest of you, who may or may not care about succulents at all. :P I intend to keep acquiring new specimens to enlarge my garden, but as I'm a student, I'll undoubtedly hit a slump when I go back to school. Hopefully though, I can continue to document all of my new arrivals!

And here are my currently documented succulents:

Echeveria melaco (such pretty little flowers!)

Sempervivum calcareum

Argyroderma spp (he was the only one of his kind left, and so odd looking!)

Peperomia graveolens (this was the reddest kind Home Depot offered)

Crassula argentea compacta (aka 'Jade')

~P.S. - I don't intend on getting any prickly varieties, for I don't like being pricked! (may change my mind though...we'll see...)
